Material Guide: Boards, Corrugated, and Films
Compare common substrates used in custom boxes, bags, and labels so you can discuss tradeoffs with your production team.
Solid bleached sulfate (SBS)
SBS is a smooth white paperboard favored for cosmetics, confectionery, and high-resolution litho print. It folds cleanly and accepts coatings well.
It is typically used where a bright white background supports vibrant CMYK or fine type for ingredients and regulatory copy.
Kraft and uncoated boards
Kraft boards communicate natural or craft positioning. Print may require white underprint to preserve brand colors on brown stock.
Uncoated kraft can feel authentic but is more susceptible to scuffing; aqueous or matte coatings help in transit.
Corrugated flute profiles
E-flute and B-flute are common in mailers and shippers. E-flute offers a thinner profile; B-flute adds cushioning for heavier items.
Double-wall combinations may be specified when stacking strength or puncture resistance is a priority for master cartons.
Flexible film laminates
Stand-up pouches and mylar-style bags often use layered films for moisture and oxygen barriers. Structure depends on fill product and shelf life goals.
Discuss degassing valves, tear notches, and zipper closures with your filling equipment vendor before finalizing pouch dimensions.
Choosing responsibly
Material choices interact with curbside recyclability, recycled content targets, and product protection needs. There is rarely a single perfect substrate.
Document the rationale for your selection so future SKU extensions stay aligned with sustainability messaging approved by your team.
